The Frank Black Middle School co-ed tennis team hosted its first match against Lanier Middle School at their new facility on March 17, 2026. The Panthers secured 4 victories in the 12 boys' matches, with the girls' matches scheduled for a later date.

The competition featured exciting singles and doubles matches, with both teams demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship. This quality is particularly important, especially since a rematch with Lanier is set for the spring 2026 season. Additionally, competitors from middle school may become teammates in high school, fostering friendships that can last a lifetime.

Several highlights stood out during the afternoon, particularly two impressive matches that thrilled families, classmates, and tennis fans.

In the number one doubles match, Oliver Barrera and Ethan Brawley teamed up to win their opening match with a score of 5-1. These sixth graders displayed impressive on-court tactics, notably their high first-serve percentages, which allowed them to win points effortlessly. Brawley was particularly effective at the net, capitalizing on Barrera's powerful service returns.

Additionally, the doubles team of sixth graders Jake Bucko and Henry Jones won a very competitive match 5-4.

Another highlight was Barrera's performance in the #1 singles position against a skilled player from Lanier. Although the final score of 4-0 seemed lopsided, many rallies were lengthy and engaging. Barrera, who has a UTR ranking over 3.0 and has won several USTA Level 5 events, showcased a diverse array of strokes to outmaneuver his opponent.

Rounding out the fourth boy's match point, Jones won his singles contest 4-0.

FBMS Athletic Director Anthony Castelline commented during the match, "Our team has displayed great skill and sportsmanship while representing our school. Today's match is just the first step in establishing FBMS as a leader in tennis competition within HISD. With our new tennis courts, FBMS has set a high-quality standard."

"On behalf of Principal De Castro and the PTO, we congratulate the tennis team and booster club for creating a positive team environment that will be enhanced with each match."

Led by sixth-grader Lilly Merrill, the girls' squad is prepared to play their matches against Lanier, so stay tuned for the final scores to be announced soon.
