As the Spring 2026 tennis season begins for the Houston Independent School District 10-5A, Waltrip High School's returning leader, junior Wyatt Dudley, has established himself as the player to beat.

During a multi-school tournament held at Westbury High School on March 21, 2026, Dudley claimed victory in both the boys' singles and mixed doubles competitions.

In the singles matches, Dudley started strong with an easy win against Sterling High School. He then faced a formidable opponent from Scarborough High School, winning a thrilling match that went to a third-set tiebreaker, finishing with a score of 10-8. In the finals, Dudley defeated his Waltrip teammate, Lucas Alvarez,  6-2.

In the mixed doubles event, Dudley partnered with Tracey Rasmussen, and together they overcame a team from Westbury, winning the finals 6-3.

With the District Championships fast approaching on March 30, 2026, Dudley, who won the singles title in 2025, appears ready to defend his position as the top player.

"Over the past year, I have been combining my karate training with tennis practices to improve my agility and speed on the court," commented Dudley, who is also a black belt in karate.

"I really appreciate the Waltrip coaches for designing our tennis schedule to peak in late March ahead of the district-level matches. Tracey and I are determined to win the mixed doubles title this year."

Waltrip High School, which opened in 1960, competes in Texas’s UIL Class 5A athletics. In May 2025, Waltrip’s tennis courts were rededicated, thanks to support from the Parent-Teacher Organization and a Houston initiative, SPARK Park, which aims to develop school and community green spaces.

During the 1990s, Waltrip regularly made appearances in the UIL Team Tennis playoffs. Notably, in 2016, both the boys' and girls' tennis teams won district championships and advanced to the UIL regional tournament.

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, Waltrip High School's principal, Margaret Randall, has significantly enhanced the tennis coaching staff and upgraded the tennis center on 34th Street, making it a prime location for the Oak Forest community to gather on weekends.

With the developing tennis program at Frank Black Middle School, Waltrip’s future in tennis looks very promising.
