FBMS Dominates Pin Oak 11-2 Despite Tight Matches and Gusty Winds

In a match up of two Houston Independent School District (HISD) middle school tennis powerhouses, the Frank Black Middle School Panthers defeated Pin Oak Middle School 11-2 on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Panthers' newly enhanced tennis center on the school's campus.

While the final score suggests a dominant performance, the contest was anything but lopsided. Most singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches were hard-fought battles that came down to the final games, with players from both teams displaying remarkable resilience amid challenging conditions.

The Panthers got off to a strong start as the #1 doubles teams of Oliver Wojecki and Travis Allcorn, along with Ellana Yu and Mae Davis, battled high winds and stiff competition to set the tone for the afternoon.

In singles play, Frank Black's top players shone brightly. #1 singles competitors Lilly Merrill and Oliver Barrera dominated their Pin Oak opponents with strong, consistent performances that showcased their skill and composure.

Adding to the highlights was the debut of a new mixed doubles pairing: Jake Bucko and Ellana Yu. The duo combined effectively in their inaugural match, contributing another point to the Panthers' tally, with coaches describing it as a promising new pairing.

As the sun began to set over the courts and the final matches wrapped up, the FBMS team gathered for a quiet celebration of the hard-earned victory over Pin Oak, which has about 60 students in its tennis program. The atmosphere remained focused rather than exuberant, as the Panthers know a demanding stretch of competition lies ahead.

Over the coming weeks, Panthers will face several high-level opponents, primarily in away matches. The team's next contest is scheduled against St. Cecilia at Houston Christian High School on April 6, 2026.

FBMS's tennis program continues to build on its reputation as one of the strongest in HISD, supported by committed parents and strong leadership from the booster club. Additionally, the recent upgrades to their home tennis facility have created a welcoming environment for visiting teams.

With several FBMS players stepping up in tight matches and ready to challenge teammates for more playing time, the team appears well-positioned for the remainder of the 2026 spring season.
