Houston, TX – May 15, 2026 — With strong community support, dedicated volunteers, and funding from key organizations, Waltrip High School (WHS) celebrated the completion of its refurbished tennis courts on May 8, 2026. The project marks a major step forward in building a premier tennis program within the Houston Independent School District (HISD).
Principal Margaret Randall spearheaded the initiative, rallying the school's Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), the newly formed integrated tennis booster club, coaches, athletes, and community volunteers to complete the upgrades before the end of the Spring 2026 term. The courts were refurbished ahead of schedule and under budget, showcasing exceptional teamwork.
"Completing this project is a significant achievement and is a prime example of community teamwork," said Randall.
"Our 2026-2027 tennis team now has access to the newest courts within HISD. We believe our team will be inspired to establish WHS as a tennis powerhouse next season."
WHS's tennis facility now ranks among the top in the district, providing WHS athletes with high-quality playing surfaces and additional wind screens that promise to elevate training and competition.
When combined with the new tennis courts at nearby Frank Black Middle School, the partnership enables the scheduling of larger home matches across all four available courts, fostering greater opportunities for student-athletes.
Stephen Davis, president of the tennis booster club, emphasized the long-term vision: "This effort is just the beginning of our community-wide effort to establish a cohesive tennis program from elementary school, through middle school, to empower WHS's team to bring home trophies.
This revitalization not only boosts WHS's athletic ambitions but also strengthens neighborhood ties, offering residents improved recreational access while nurturing future tennis talent in the Oak Forest area.
"Ram Nation looks ahead to a bright season on the newly restored courts," added Randall.
