Garden Oaks Montessori Magnet (GOMM) School has reopened its newly refurbished USTA Red Ball tennis court, marking a significant upgrade for students and the surrounding community.
The FBMS Tennis Booster Club completed repairs and fresh painting of the court in June 2026, breathing new life into a facility originally constructed by the USTA more than a decade ago. The court has long served as an accessible starting point for GOMM students and local Houston residents to begin their tennis journey.
"This court has been a gateway for so many young players in our neighborhood," a GOMM representative noted. "We're thrilled to see it back in top condition and ready to inspire the next generation."
A standout success story from the program is Juliana Torchia, a GOMM graduate who recently completed a historic high school career by leading Heights High School to the HISD District Championship. Her achievements highlight the long-term impact of early exposure to tennis at the school.
With the project now complete, certified coaches are offering tennis instruction on-site for beginners. After-school programs are set to begin during the Fall 2026 semester, providing structured training for interested students.
GOMM students will also have the opportunity to compete in official USTA Orange Ball tournaments in August 2026 and try out for the Frank Black Middle School (FBMS) tennis team, creating a clear pathway from introductory play to competitive middle school athletics.
FBMS, part of Houston ISD, like GOMM, a Title 1, Part A school, maintains a robust athletics program that includes tennis opportunities for its students. Additionally, financial support is offered for qualifying students.
The refurbishment underscores the power of community support through the FBMS Tennis Booster Club. It reflects the ongoing commitment by local principals to enriching student experiences through sports and physical education. The Booster Club has now refurbished seven tennis courts at four HISD campuses.
The updated court is expected to welcome players of all ages and skill levels, continuing its role as a vital community resource in the Garden Oaks area.
