Once the final point is played and high school tennis seasons wrap up, many seniors shift their focus to the next major chapter: college. Based on past years and current recruiting activity, roughly 30–60 Houston-area high schoolers typically move on to college tennis programs.
And for most families, the financial realities of higher education can feel overwhelming.
Annual costs at flagship Texas universities such as UT Austin and Texas A&M frequently exceed $28,000–$35,000, depending on housing, meal plans, and lifestyle.
On June 29, 2026, the Houston Tennis Association (HTA) announced it had awarded $26,000 in college scholarships to 20 Greater Houston-area high school graduates. These student-athletes received individual awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.
According to the HTA press release, all 20 recipients played varsity tennis for their high school teams, participated in the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) program, and/or competed in local USTA tournaments. In addition to contributions from the HTA, funding was provided by the various local and national organizations, including memorial funds.
One recipient shared this comment: "As I move into college, I plan to continue playing tennis, not just as a sport, but as something that keeps me grounded. I want it to remain a part of my life as it is a part of me, whether that's playing recreationally, joining clubs, or simply getting on the court to reset and stay active."
"Tennis is something I genuinely enjoy, and it provides balance in my life. It gives me a way to step away from stress, stay healthy, and maintain a strong mindset."
Since launching its scholarship program in 1992, the HTA has awarded more than $502,000 in scholarship funds to deserving high school seniors across the Greater Houston area. The initiative underscores the HTA's ongoing commitment to supporting student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in academics, tennis, and community involvement.
And for those aspiring tennis beginners, the HTA continues to offer its popular free tennis clinics as part of the ongoing 2026 summer session of the NJTL program.
